I have a habit of highlighting and taking notes while reading books. They could be anything- thoughts, facts, quotes, or any kind of brainwork that catches my attention and inspires me either to come up with new thoughts or teaches me a cent or two of wisdom.
I am in the process of collecting those tid-bits here, because felt the need of all the notes being in one place rather than being spread out in different books all over my bookshelf. I often go through this list when I feel low or when I am simply just bored.
Happiness is good health with poor memory.
In at least one way, early social networks are like a high school party – when parents get home the fun stops and everybody leaves.
The only way to develop thicker skin emotionally is to have some scar tissue. The body has an amazing healing mechanism. When you break a bone, the re-fusing of bone tissue makes the point of breakage stronger than it had been before. The best way to absorb and handle criticism is to face a lot of it.
• That high-rising, fine-grained, supple loaf, the one that slices like a dream without crumbling, the one that tastes like
the best parts of whole wheat—nicely earthy, “nutty,” rich—had been eluding me. I’d made dry loaves; dense loaves; over-risen loaves, flabby with air and collapsing at the sidewalls. I’d made loaves whose overriding flavor was a tannic bitterness.
Loaves that tasted like… well, like nothing much at all. I’d come close to despairing.
But as any bread baker knows, hope springs eternal. So long as there’s flour in the canister and yeast in the freezer, salt on the counter and water flowing from the tap, there’ll be bread.
All attempts at gaining literary polish must begin with judicious reading, and the learner must never cease to hold this phase uppermost.
Writing is always giving some sort of order to the chaos of life. It organises life and memory.
When you face criticism you need to defend yourself without being defensive. The latter opens you to additional criticism because very often defensive will provoke negative behaviors such as lashing out or shutting down. You become caught in the moment and the niceties of polite discourse go out the window. It is fine to be passionate but you want to avoid becoming overly passionate, that is, unwilling and unable to listen to others.
Empowerment means to gain knowledge and understanding. Self empowerment means to gain knowledge and understanding of the self. Think of it like this. If you knew absolutely nothing about a car and its inner workings, and the car broke down somewhere far from home. You would have no idea what to do to fix the car, so that you can go on. Yet if you had a good knowledge and understanding of the car and its inner workings then you could figure out what needs to be done, get the tools and spares to do it, and fix it. In this situation you would be empowered (feel empowered) for you would know what to do to get yourself going again. You would not just sit in the car and wait for someone to come and sort out the problem for you.
So self-empowerment means to gain knowledge over the Self. In a similar way that you would have gained knowledge and understanding on the inner workings of the car.
Notes from Dr. House's class :)
"You want to know how two chemicals interact, do you ask them? No, they're going to lie through their lying little chemical teeth. Throw them in a beaker and apply heat."

•Dr. House: Are you going to base your whole life on who you're stuck in a room with?
Eve the Patient: I'm going to base this moment on who I am stuck in a room with! It's what life is. It's a series of rooms, and who we get stuck in those rooms with, adds up to what our lives are.

•You know it's all nice when people start to dig these holes, but then they start to live in these holes and get angry when someone pushes dirt into those holes. Come out of your holes, people!
("House vs. God")

•Dr. House: Nothing matters. We're all just cockroaches, wildebeests dying on the river bank. Nothing we do has any lasting meaning.
Evan Greer: And you think I'm miserable?
Dr. House: If you're unhappy on the plane, jump out of it.
Evan Greer: I want to, but I can't.
Dr. House: That's the problem with metaphors. They need interpretation. Jumping out of the plane is stupid.
Evan Greer: But what if I'm not in a plane? What if I'm just in a place I don't want to be?
Dr. House: That's the other problem with metaphors. Yes, what if you're actually in an ice cream truck, and outside are candy and flowers and virgins? You're on a plane! We're all on planes. Life is dangerous and complicated, and it's a long way down.

•Dr. Wilson: Beauty often seduces us on the road to truth.
Dr. House: And triteness kicks us in the nads.
("Occam's Razor")

•Dr. House: You know, when the Inuit go fishing, they don't look for fish.
Dr. Wilson: Why, Dr. House?
Dr. House: They look for the blue heron, because there's no way to see the fish. But if there's fish, there's gonna be birds fishing. Now, if he's got hairy-cell, what else are we gonna see circling overhead?

•The tumor is Afghanistan, the clot is Buffalo. Does that need more explanation? OK, the tumor is Al-Qaeda. We went in and wiped it out, but it had already sent out a splinter cell--a small team of low-level terrorists quietly living in some suburb of Buffalo, waiting to kill us all. . . . It was an excellent metaphor. Angio her brain for this clot before it straps on an explosive vest.
•Northern Hemisphere or Southern, the Toilets Drain the Same
It's hard to admit when you've been pursuing a white whale of a goal. Next time you're tempted to hang on until the last thread snaps, remember that letting go frees you up for something new.
• I have been in this joint since God's dog was a puppy. Since Adam was a young boy. Since the earth cooled, since the dinosaurs said enough is enough" - Killing Floor, Lee Child
• I am more of a solitary than a collaborator- George R R Martin.
• Famous or not, Mr. Martin is still obliged to sit down each day and write because millions of agitated fans are waiting,
hoping that “Winter” is coming — soon. He’s writing too slowly for some fans’ tastes, but quality takes time.
When asked about his progress on “The Winds of Winter,” all Mr. Martin would say, a sigh tinting his voice, was, “It’s going along.”
It was the sigh of a good dreamer on deadline.
To a greater or lesser degree, everyone has some bitterness in their organism.
Just as we are all the carriers of the tuberculosis bacillus. - Paulo Coelho
You have passed the two hardest tests on the spiritual road: the patience to wait for the right moment
and the courage not to be disappointed with what you encounter.
Normality, is merely a matter of consensus, that is, a lot of people think something is right,
and so that thing becomes right. Some things are governed by common sense, putting buttons in front of a shirt
is a matter of logic, since it would be very difficult to button them up at the side, and impossible if they were at the back
